Gullviva

Gullvivan är bland vårens ("veris") förstlingar ("primula"). Redan vid snösmältningen visar sig den övervintrande bladrosetten med vitgröna, sammetsludna blad, och i maj och juni kommer gullvivans blommor, strax efter vitsippans. Gullviva är på sina håll mycket ymnig och plockas i mycket till buketter, och är en av årstidens populäraste prydnadsblommor. Emellertid har den i vissa landsdelar minskat och är fridlyst i delar av landet. Den får inte plockas i Skåne, Hallands och Örebro Län. I resten av landet är det tillåtet att plocka en bukett till sig själv. Man får inte gräva upp eller dra upp blommorna med rötterna.

Primula veris (Cowslip; syn. Primula officinalis Hill) is a flowering plant in the genus Primula. The species is found throughout most of temperate Europe and Asia, and although absent from more northerly areas including much of northwest Scotland, it reappears in northernmost Sutherland and Orkney.


Cowslip flowers were traditionally used for making cowslip wine, cowslip mead and salads; the 19th century English botanist and illustrator, Anne Pratt, wrote of it:

In the midland and southern counties of England, a sweet and pleasant wine resembling the muscadel is made from the cowslip flower, and it is one of the most wholesome and pleasant of home-made wines, and slightly narcotic in its effects. In times when English wines were more used, every housewife in Warwickshire could produce her clear cowslip wine...the cowslip is still sold in many markets for this purpose, and little cottage girls still ramble the meadows during April and May in search of it...country people use it as a salad or boil it for the table.

Vilken underbar moder natur vi har - allt som den skänker oss. Tänk förr dekorerade man sina julgrannar med det naturen gav. Kottar , äpple och andra bär. Nu finns mycket färdigt att köpa men härligt är att man själv fortfarande kan skörda i sin trädgård. Annika Christensen

Nature gives us more splendour than anyone could wish for.
I remember the days of the Christmas tree being decorated with apples, berries and nuts and home-made fudge wrapped in white tissue paper and coloured cellophane with the ends fringed and nothing bought at all except some heavy silver lametta and candles of course.

Todays flower - My three flowers

They are wearing
Buxus sempervirens Boxwood is a flowering plant in the genus Buxus, native to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia, from southern England south to northern Morocco, and east through the northern Mediterranean region to Turkey.

It is an evergreen shrub or small tree growing to 1-9 m tall, with a trunk up to 20 cm diameter (exceptionally to 10 m tall and 45 cm diameter. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, green to yellow-green, oval, 15-30 mm long and 5-13 mm broad. The hermaphrodite flowers are inconspicuous, greenish-yellow, with no petals and are insect pollinated; the fruit is a three-lobed capsule containing 3-6 seeds.

We celebrate Lucia in sweden today, and you can have this in your hair or glitter.

Lucia - In traditional celebrations, Saint Lucy comes as a young woman with lights and sweets. It is one of the few saint days observed in Scandinavia. In some forms, a procession is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles (or lights), while others in the procession hold only a single candle each.

So now I am off for church and to see and listen to my two dotters that will "do Lucia".

Birch - Betula
The chaga mushroom is an adaptogen that grows on white birch trees, extracting the birch constituents and is used to treat cancer.
Birch bark can be soaked until moist in water, and then formed.
In northern latitudes birch is considered to be the most important allergenic tree pollen, with an estimated 15-20% of hay fever sufferers sensitive to birch pollen grains.

Oak
Within its native range Q. robur is valued for its importance to insects and other wildlife. Numerous insects live on the leaves, buds, and in the acorns. The acorns form a valuable food resource for several small mammals and some birds, notably Eurasian Jays Garrulus glandarius. Jays were overwhelmingly the primary propagators of oaks before humans began planting them commercially, because of their habit of taking acorns from the umbra of its parent tree and burying it undamaged elsewhere. Mammals, notably squirrels who tend to hoard acorns and other nuts most often leave them too abused to grow in the action of moving or storing them.

A specimen of notable longevity is one in Stelmužė, Lithuania which is believed to be approximately 1,500 years old, possibly making it the oldest oak in Europe; another specimen can be found in Kvilleken, Sweden, it is over 1,000 years old and 14 meters around.

I found it difficult to find blue flowers in my garden, this year did you have any blue?
Here is mine from past summer.

Color lasts up to a month!
Enchanting indigo-blue pom-poms made up of little star-shaped florets
appear atop tall, sturdy stems. An excellent choice for the center of your perennial bed.

Many species are cultivated as garden plants and for flower arrangements, with numerous cultivars available.

In Transylvania, it was used to keep witches from the stables, probably because of its black color.[citation needed]

Blåklint, Centaurea cyanus (Cornflower, Bachelor's button, Bluebottle, Boutonniere flower, Hurtsickle) is a small annual flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe.

In folklore, cornflowers were worn by young men in love; if the flower faded too quickly, it was taken as a sign that the man's love was not returned.
The blue cornflower has been the national flower of Estonia since 1968 and symbolizes daily bread to Estonians. It is also the symbol of the Estonian political party, People's Union, the Finnish political party, National Coalition Party, and the Swedish political party, Liberal People's Party, and has since the dawn of the 20th century been a symbol for social liberalism there.

Blue Monday

Todays flower - Yellow

Daylily is the common name of the species, hybrids and cultivars of the genus Hemerocallis. The flowers of these plants are highly diverse in colour and form, often resulting from hybridization by gardening enthusiasts

The flowers of some species are edible and are used in Chinese cuisine. They are sold (fresh or dried) in Asian markets as gum jum or golden needles (金针 in Chinese; pinyin: jīnzhēn) or yellow flower vegetables. They are used in hot and sour soup, daylily soup (金針花湯), Buddha's delight. The young green leaves and the tubers of some species are also edible. The plant has also been used for medicinal purposes. Care must be used as some species can be toxic.

Rudbeckia 'Prarie Sun', I grow it from seed and have it over the summer here in Sweden.

The genus Lilium are herbaceous flowering plants growing from bulbs. Lilies comprise a genus of about 110 species in the lily family (Liliaceae) and are important as large showy flowering garden plants. Additionally, they are important culturally and in literature in much of the world.
Some species are sometimes grown or harvested for the edible bulbs.
The species in this genus are the true lilies. Many other plants exist with "lily" in the common English name, some of which are quite unrelated to the true lilies.
My dotter name is Lilly - from the lilyplants.

Calendula officinalis, known as Pot Marigold or Scotch Marigold, is a plant in the Calendula genus. It was used in ancient Greek, Roman, Arabic and Indian cultures as a medicinal herb as well as a dye for fabrics, foods and cosmetics.
The leaves and petals of the Pot Marigold are edible, with the petals added to dishes as a garnish and in lieu of saffron. The leaves can be sweet but are more commonly bitter, and may be used in salads.
They are very easy to grow!

Dill (Anethum graveolens) is a short-lived perennial herb. It is the sole species of the genus Anethum, though classified by some botanists in a related genus as Peucedanum graveolens (L.) C.B.Clarke

In Semitic languages it is known by the name of Shubit. The Talmud requires that tithes shall be paid on the seeds, leaves, and stem of dill. The Bible states that the Pharisees were in the habit of paying dill as tithe.[2] Jesus rebuked them for tithing dill but omitting justice, mercy and faithfulness.

This is a new summer plant for me, "Fjärilskrasse" (Tropaeolum peregrinum, Butterfly...) and I did get it with a butterfly!
